Quick Start Guide for Transcribers

The transcription process is quite simple, say you wanted to work on polling district 2 in Alnwick in Northumberland County, NB:

If your transcription includes names using accented characters, and if your keyboard is not configured accordingly, a list of the most commonly used ones is supplied immediately under the input box. You can either copy/paste those characters or follow instructions on how to produce them using the Alt key and the numeric keypad.

When you get to the bottom of the image, scroll back to the top of the image and either click on one of the vertical position links above the image (e.g. upper(10-21) to view lines 10 to 21) or click on the down arrow in a box just above the image (scrolling to the right if necessary to bring it in view), this will bring additional lines into view.

You may edit or add notes to each line previously transcribed. Please consult the Transcription Tips and Guidelines.

Before starting please read the document Transcription Tips and Guidelines, there is a link on the main census page under Documentation. When reading the original census document, you will encounter various problems and errors. It is important to know how to deal with each one of them, in order to produce a uniform transcription of the census which will be as accurate as possible.
