Agapit LeBlanc named for slain Bouctouche fisheries officer

Fisheries officer was investigating illegal fishing vessels when someone killed him

CBC News Posted: Jul 09, 2015 9:17 PM AT

A new Canadian Coast Guard patrol vessel has been named in memory of a fisheries officer from Bouctouche, N.B., who was murdered on the job 88 years ago.

Agapit LeBlanc was killed on Oct. 20, 1926 while investigating illegal fishing activity. His body was found weighted down in eight metres of water. He was 39. His murder was never solved.

The CCGS A. LeBlanc, a Hero-class mid-shore patrol vessel, built by Irving Shipbuliding Inc. in Halifax, was inaugurated on Thursday.

It will be used mainly to enforce fisheries regulations in the St. Lawrence River and Gulf of St. Lawrence, Fisheries and Oceans Canada said in a statement.

Hero Class vessels are named for decorated soldiers, veterans and police officers, as well as employees of Fisheries and Oceans Canada and the Canadian Coast Guard.

By naming these vessels after Canadian heroes, the Government of Canada says it hopes to encourage further generations to learn about Canadian history, culture and geography
